WIP

Good-day to my knitting friends. Today I am a bit tired and truly my WIP are not what I would like them to be. I have been suffering from feeling a lack of crafting direction and looking at my stash with a vacant expression of wonder.

I usually get all of my drive from completing projects for others. So although I feel horribly uninspired, I have been trying to make gloves for one of my co-workers. Its not going very well but I am going to keep at it.

Also I have dabbled in dyeing with natural dyes such as tea and onion skins. That was a lot of fun and it constitutes my only work in progress as I am still trying to find more things from my pantry that can be used.

Here is what I have managed so far. The mini-skein of Alpaca, Wool and Acrylic in the middle is the original yarn, shown for reference.

The left show-cases the result of an onion and carrot skin bath mixed with lime vinegar. I love the colour. I am eager to try again to see if I can get a darker shade of mustard yellow.

The skein to the far right, is the tea-dyed skein. It is an ecru and again, I love it and am ready to see what other colours I can get from using tea.

I have bought some peppermint tea to see what tones I can get from it. In the future  plan to buy from black walnut shells as well as some cherries to try for a different family of shades. Wish me luck.

To join the knitting circle go to here, and join in. Don't be shy!

  1. BEAUTIFUL! I love seeing what people can do with natural dyes! Do you know how it keeps over time as far as the color goes?

  2. Such pretty natural colors! Hand dyeing looks like fun. I would love to see what results you can achieve with cherries, too.

  3. @Tami. I don't know but I will keep track of that as it is also a concern of mine!!

It is generally recommendatory to wash by hand as newer detergents are made to remove plant stains and to avoid drying in the sunlight as bleaching can occur.

  6. How interesting. That is how people used to dye cloth or make pigment back in earlier times. I am glad to see the skill is being kept alive. I didn't realize you could use onion skins to dye things.

  7. It all sounds like such fun! I have a Lace Fichu that is light blue, so not my color. I have been toying with over dying it. I think you have given me the impetus, if not the exact dye options. Not ready for natural dyes yet!

  8. @Crafty There are so many things you can use, it is fun to investigate.

@Chrisknits It is fun. I hope you do try to dye the light blue over, it would be lovely to see the result.
