Triple H - Cont'd

I did the cast on for the third of my hats in a fingering weight wool yarn that I got from worldonadot, an Etsy seller from Estonia.

This is done up on size three needles. I have worked the Winter Fat Hat to the final increase, and I am still working on getting the Carnival Cotton to that stage. Hopefully tomorrow I will have pictures of the two of those.

As promised a word on working hats from the brim up. The amount of stitches cast on would be the same as my suggested final number of stitches.

The brim of a hat is typically done in ribbing so that it holds its shape but can still stretch. Ribbing can be Knit 1, Purl 1 or Knit 2, Purl 2 etc. 

Because of the width of these stitches and the elasticity, it is recommended to do the ribbing on needles one or two sizes smaller than you will for the remainder of your hat. 

This means if you are going to knit in size 9, your ribbed brim should be done up on size 7 or 8 needles. 

Typically a brim is one to two inches but you may want to create a rolled brim and so you would have a brim of three to four inches or even more depending on how thick you want it to be.

Though I am concentrating on top down hats, I will in future endeavors, knit hats in the opposite direction. Hats with large brims like caps and cloches are also somewhere in my future.

For now, I'm going back to my wool.
